Summer Excursions 2008
EARLY DOUGLAS - SATURDAY 26TH APRIL at 2-30pm
NIGEL CROWE, an expert on Manx historic buildings, will look at the evidence for the pre-urban development of Douglas in its early town centre and along the harbour quayside. The afternoon will end with the chance for a cup of tea at Greens café at the Steam Railway Station on the North Quay. Here, Nigel will present a slide show looking at the area he has just walked us through.

THE CAMERA OBSCURA AND DOUGLAS HEAD - SATURDAY 10TH MAY at 2-30pm
PETER KELLY, well known local historian and Victorian-period expert, will give us an in-depth tour around the many historical and architectural features of Douglas Head, finishing with the Camera Obscura. Entrance to the Obscura is £1-00.

THE ENERGY FROM WASTE PLANT - TUESDAY 17TH JUNE AT 2PM OR WEDNESDAY 18TH JUNE at 6-30pm.
TRACY CLIFT will guide us through this opportunity to see inside the workings of the incinerator, explaining the processes that go into the disposal of the Island’s waste, and how the heat created from incineration is converted into usable energy.

MAUGHOLD HEAD AND PORT MOOAR - SATURDAY 12TH JULY at 2-30pm
Manx National Heritage curators KATE HAWKINS AND ANDREW JOHNSON will lead this walk around Maughold Head to Port
Mooar. Kate will be looking at the flora, fauna, insects, and bird populations, and Andrew will look at the evidence for any
archæological and historical features in the landscape. This will include some rough walking so appropriate protective footwear
should be worn.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY EVENT AT BALLADOOLE - SATURDAY 19TH JULY at 2-30pm
BARBARA DOYLE will lead this excursion which will look at the archæological features of this ancient hill fort site and investigate how it has been used as a place of burial by many different people over many hundreds of years.
Children must be accompanied by an adult.

ELLERSLIE FARM AND ST RUNIUS CHAPEL, CROSBY - SATURDAY 16TH AUGUST at 2-30pm
FRANK COWIN will lead an excursion, by kind permission of the owners, Willie Christian and his family, around this remarkable collection of early farm buildings. Frank will explain the history and development of this important argricultural complex. We will then walk up the nearby hill to look at Marown Old Church - the Chapel of St Runius.

THE NUNNERY ESTATE FOOTPATH - SATURDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER at 2-30pm
Local historian DAVID RADCLIFFE will lead this walk which will follow the route of the old Nunnery estate footpath that once went as far as Braddan church. David will be pointing out the buildings and historical features of interest along the way, ranging from the Nunnery buildings and estate boundaries, to the millrace, railway structures and more.
