Winter Lectures 2009 - 2010

Come along and enjoy our fascinating programme of winter lectures this autumn and winter  - and learn more about the Natural History and Antiquities of the Isle of Man.

Everyone is welcome, you don’t need to be a member of the Society.

All the Lectures are held in the Manx Museum, Douglas at 2.30 p.m. and followed by tea

Andree Dubbeldam
“Wildflower Conservation on the Isle of Man”

Conservation of the Island’s wildflowers, from the extent and reasons for their decline to the potential strategy for future conservation.  Andree Dubbeldam is the Project Manager of the Wildflowers of Mann Project.


Saturday 28th November
Marshall Cubbon
“Some Manx Archaeological Memories”

The former long-time Director of the Manx Museum will reminisce on some of the more memorable archaeological activities from his early years at the Museum.  In particular he will pay tribute to the outstanding work of Gerhard Bersu, the eminent German archaeologist who was interned in the Isle of Man during the second world war and continued his excavation of Manx sites into the early post-war period.  He will also acknowledge the very significant contribution to Manx archaeological studies made by Basil Megaw, the former Director of the Manx Museum and his boss, who became his very good friend.


Friday 4th December
Manx National Heritage lecture at the Manx Museum, 7.30 p.m.  

Charles Guard will commemorate the “Ellan Vannin”, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s vessel which was lost approaching the River Mersey on 3rd December 1909.


Saturday 5th December
Jonathan Kewley
“Manx Local Government in the 18th and 19th Centuries”

An exploration of local government functions in the Isle of Man before the institution of town, village and parish commissioners, including identification of the geographical units used, and consideration of the role of the Established Church.  How distinctive was the Manx system from that in England?


Saturday 30th January
Catriona Mackie
“The Manx House”

Past and current research on the traditional housing of the Isle of Man.  Dr. Mackie is Lecturer in Manx Studies at the University of Liverpool’s Centre for Manx Studies in Douglas.


Saturday 27th February
The Presidential Lecture
Frank Cowin - “Sloops, Cutters and the Golden Triangle”

A look at some naval activity in Douglas in the late 18th century.



Saturday 27th March
Annual General Meeting, followed by
“Ronaldsway 2009”
Andrew Johnson, Curator

Field Archaeology/Inspector of Ancient Monuments, Manx National Heritage, will give an update on the significant archaeological discoveries made during work on the Airport’s Runway Project.
